NAGPUR NEWS : Drug trafficking and consumption have been on the rise in Nagpur over the past few years, with police regularly cracking down on drug networks. However, authorities believe that enforcement alone is not enough, as the number of drug users has also increased significantly.
In a major step to strengthen enforcement, Nagpur Police have been equipped with two advanced drug testing kits and breath analysers. Earlier, individuals suspected of drug consumption had to be taken for medical examination, a process that consumed considerable time. With the new kits, police can now determine within just five minutes which substances have been consumed and in what quantity, significantly speeding up legal procedures.
The equipment has been provided by SaveLIFE Foundation in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz India under a CSR initiative. This move is expected to improve conviction rates and ensure quicker punishment for offenders.
Authorities highlighted that cases of drunk and drug-influenced driving have been increasing, especially on highways like the Samruddhi Expressway.
The new devices will help curb such incidents and enhance road safety.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Nagpur City Police and SaveLIFE Foundation, and around 25 police personnel have been trained to operate the new equipment under the ‘Zero Fatality Corridor’ programme. Notably, this is the first such initiative of its kind in Maharashtra.
